Chronicles of a Unforgettable Tour in the Historic Center of Cartagena

The sun was just beginning to rise over the walls surrounding the Historic Center of Cartagena, bathing the cobbled streets in golden light. We met Mathias and Pauline, a couple of tourists who had arrived from Germany, eager to discover the charms of this Caribbean city.

Our tour began at the iconic Clock Tower, the majestic entrance to the heart of the walled city. The couple, with their cameras ready and radiant smiles, admired the colonial architecture surrounding them. We walked together to Plaza de los Coches, a vibrant space where carriages and street vendors offered a glimpse of Cartagena’s bustling life.

Pauline, fascinated by history, made a stop at the Zenú Gold Museum. Inside, we immersed ourselves in the legacy of pre-Columbian cultures, admiring the fine goldsmith pieces that gleamed under the light. Mathias, more inclined towards photography, captured every detail, from the exhibits to the expressions of wonder on his wife’s face.

Leaving the museum, we headed to Plaza de la Aduana, where the imposing building of the same name reminded us of the splendor of the colonial past. We stopped at one of the outdoor cafes to refresh ourselves with a coconut lemonade, a local delight that became pauline’s instant favorite.

We continued our walk along Calle de las Damas, a narrow alley adorned with flower-filled balconies and colorful facades. The couple was enchanted by the romantic atmosphere of the place. I told them about the legends of love and tragedy hidden behind those ancient doors, and their interest grew even more.

The next stop was Plaza Santo Domingo, home to the famous sculpture “La Gorda Gertrudis” by Fernando Botero. Mathias couldn’t resist posing next to the statue while Pauline laughed and took pictures. The cheerful and relaxed atmosphere of the square invited us to stay a while, enjoying the live music that filled the air.

At noon, the heat led us to seek refuge in Las Bóvedas, former dungeons converted into craft shops. Pauline and Mathias explored every shop, marveling at the handmade souvenirs. We left with bags full of little treasures that will always remind them of their visit to Cartagena.

Our tour culminated at the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, an imposing fortress overlooking the city. The view from the top was breathtaking; the Caribbean Sea stretched as far as the eye could see, and the city sparkled under the sun. As we walked through the castle’s tunnels, I told them stories of battles and pirates, igniting their imagination.

At the end of the day, Pauline and Mathias thanked me for showing them an authentic Cartagena, full of stories and magic. We said goodbye with the promise of meeting again, carrying with us the memory of an unforgettable day in the Historic Center of Cartagena.
